Second Sunday of Ordinary Time - C

The Wedding Feast at Cana

This Gospel from John is layered with all kinds of deep symbolism, but for me it is a delightful insight into the man Jesus and his love for life - our life, human life. It takes place just at the beginning of his three years of ministry. And what better way is there to begin than with a party, a celebration. (Haven't we all celebrated this way.)
Jesus, along with his mother, family, friends and disciples are officially celebrating a marriage. But when John tells us that Jesus reveals his Glory, and his disciples belived in him after the miracle of 600 litres of water to wine, it is easy to sense the the happiness and joy that enlivened their spirits and their dreams on this wonderful day.
Our God is a generous and happy God and he wants us to be happy too. This is why he created us, and why God became one of us. (With a little imagination I can see the little boy Jesus enchanted with all that he had created, and enthusiastically enjoying this wonderful planet as he grew up.) Let us remember this Sunday that we are all God's children and God wants us to be happy. Happiness is why he created us, and why he came to save us. Jesus shows us the way to happiness in this world and in the next. Let us rejoice and give thanks!
